How it works

The Shure SM58 is a cardioid dynamic vocal microphone — the industry standard for live singing since 1966. Dynamic means it uses a moving-coil element (no power required), so it handles very loud sources without distortion and shrugs off drops onto concrete stage floors.

The cardioid pickup pattern only listens to what's directly in front of the capsule and rejects sound from behind — this is what lets vocalists stand in front of a wedge monitor or PA speaker without feedback howling. A built-in pop filter and shock mount reduce breath pops and handling noise.

It has a tailored frequency response with a presence boost around 2-5 kHz, which is why voices cut through a busy mix. Plug it into any mic preamp with a standard XLR cable — no phantom power needed. Works on any mixer, audio interface, or PA system.
